What "appearing in AI search" can mean
The phrase covers several different things, and they are worth separating before you try to measure any of them.
- A mention — your business or brand is named in the answer text
- A citation — the answer explicitly references a source
- A cited URL or domain — the specific page or site credited
- A recommendation — your business is suggested among options
- An accurate description — what is said about you is correct
Why the same business gets different answers
Ask two slightly different questions and you can get two unrelated sets of sources. Ask the same question twice and the answer may still differ.
This is not a fault to be corrected. It follows from how these systems work.
- Wording changes which sources are considered relevant
- Providers use different retrieval methods and different content
- Some answers cite sources, some do not, and the format changes over time
- Location, language, account history and interface version can all influence output
- Models and their underlying data are updated without external notice
Why there is no single universal visibility report
A genuine cross-provider visibility report would require stable, permitted, representative access to every major AI answer surface, plus an agreed definition of what a mention is worth and a reliable way to sample the questions real customers ask.
None of those conditions is currently satisfied. Providers do not publish this data about your business, sampling a handful of prompts is not a measurement of the population of real questions, and a figure that changes when you rephrase the prompt is not a metric.
A number is not evidence simply because it is presented as a percentage. Ask what was observed, where, when, and how often.
Testing visibility versus assessing readiness
These are different activities with different reliability, and both have a place.
Testing visibility
You ask real questions in a specific AI system and record exactly what came back, including the date, the wording and the sources cited. This produces genuine observations. Their weakness is coverage: they describe those attempts, not your general presence.
Assessing readiness
You examine your own public website for the things that would prevent a system from discovering or understanding it. This is repeatable and verifiable, because the evidence is yours. Its weakness is that it says nothing about what any provider actually did.
Why evidence has to be observable
In this area the temptation to estimate is strong, because the honest answer is incomplete. But an estimate dressed as an observation leads to real decisions being made on invented information.
A useful discipline: for any AI visibility claim, ask what was observed, in which system, on what date, for which question, and how many times. If those answers do not exist, the claim is modelling, not measurement.
Do not treat a readiness score as proof of appearing
A readiness assessment tells you whether your website is prepared to be found and understood. It does not tell you that any AI system has mentioned or cited you.
Both are worth knowing. They must not be presented as the same fact, and a high readiness score should never be reported to a business as evidence of AI visibility.
What you can sensibly do now
Improve the things that are within your control and that help regardless of which system is reading: pages that can be reached and indexed, an unambiguous description of what you do and where, direct answers to the questions customers genuinely ask, and accurate, consistent detail across your site.
If you want observations, keep a simple dated record of the questions you tried, the system you used and what appeared. Modest and real beats confident and invented.
Insyte's position
Insyte reports what it can genuinely verify. It assesses AI search readiness from your own public website and stores each check as evidence, so changes over time are real changes.
Insyte does not currently claim to measure mentions or citations inside ChatGPT, Google AI answers, Copilot or Perplexity. Where that observation is not available, the product states that plainly rather than producing a figure.
